Along with others around the world, we’re raising awareness of stroke

Why Be Ready to #ActFAST

Every year, millions of people around the world are impacted by brain strokes, with one in four adults experiencing it at some point in their lifetime. According to a recent report, brain strokes have become one of the leading causes of death and disability in Kenya.                      Together, ActFAST

Stroke Association of Kenya and Kenyatta National Hospital

The Stroke Association of Kenya (SAoK) is a survivor led, member driven not for profit organization at the forefront of redefining stroke care in Kenya and beyond. With a bold vision of “Building a Global Survivor Led Stroke Care System,” SAoK pioneers community based, scalable models that transform stroke prevention, emergency care, rehabilitation, and policy into a system that puts survivors and caregivers at the center of the solution

The Stroke Association of Kenya:

  • Stroke Prevention: Conducting educational and awareness programs to inform the public about stroke prevention and the risk factors associated with it.
  • Survivor Support: Offering post-rehabilitation support for stroke survivors, including wellness programs, counseling, and support groups, providing a vital peer network.
  • Caregiver Support: Provision of support for caregivers, recognizing the challenges they face and offering them a support network and resources.
  • Advocacy: Advocating for better stroke care policies and increased funding for stroke prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation at both national and local levels.
  • Community Engagement: Actively engaging the community through initiatives like World Stroke Day events and by developing community-integrated, scalable models for stroke care.
  • Research and Information: Focusing on producing and disseminating stroke information, and facilitates access to information about rehabilitation services and other critical resources for stroke survivors and their caregivers.

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) will host the World Stroke Day event on October 29th. The event aims to raise awareness about stroke and advocate for improved care.

World Stroke Day Experience Pass

Observed on the 29th of October every year, World Stroke Day is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about strokes and their impact on individuals and communities. The day also focuses on spreading awareness about stroke, its preventive measures, early detection, and treatment options, ensuring better care and support for the survivors. Organised every year by the World Stroke organisation (WSO), this day brings an opportunity for healthcare professionals, organisations, and communities to come together and educate people about the signs, symptoms, and risk factors associated with strokes, with an ultimate goal to reduce the number of cases.

This year we are converging at the Kenyatta National Hospital the largest hospital in the region to celebrate this day as we raise awareness on stroke, build a community of stroke survivors and stregthen our core reason for existance as we collaborate with diverse health professionals.

Stroke is an emergency. Call 911/919 if these signs are present.

[F = FACE DROOPING] Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?

[A = ARM WEAKNESS] Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

[S = SPEECH] Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.”

[T = TIME TO CALL 911] If you have any of these symptoms or see someone else having them, call 911 immediately!

Join us on October 29th 2025 to drive public awareness of stroke symptoms and the need to #ActFAST. With 1 in 4 of us at risk of stroke in our lifetime, it’s in everyone’s interest to know the signs of stroke. Time lost is brain lost and seeking emergency care as soon as symptoms are spotted saves lives and can enable treatments that improve our chances of a full recovery.
